The idea for A Teacher’s Net Worth grew out of ongoing efforts to address teacher turnover, including a pivotal conversation with an exceptionally talented high school special education teacher. He candidly shared his struggle to make ends meet, feeling he had no option but to resign. He laid out his family budget, voiced his confusion about district health insurance plans, and expressed doubts about the state pension plan and other retirement tools. Ultimately, he felt trapped in a persistent state of financial distress.
Through our conversations, we walked through each of his concerns, answered his questions, corrected misperceptions, and opened new insights. We reviewed his income and debt, created a practical monthly budget, compared health, dental, and vision insurance options, explored employer-sponsored savings plans including 403(b), 457(b), and HSAs/FSAs, clarified how pensions are calculated, and discussed the value of unused leave time. Finally, we looked at how to compare public and private sector jobs and, most importantly, discussed the value proposition of teaching.
With this clearer understanding of both his financial picture and the district’s investment in him, his perspective shifted. He became more optimistic about his future — and this exceptionally talented educator decided to stay in the profession!
That experience and many others revealed a larger opportunity to help others gain the same clarity and insight. What began as mini-sessions for all staff — teachers, support staff and administrators — soon grew into longer, more detailed presentations and interactive workshops. This book, along with the suite of interactive, customizable spreadsheets and other recruitment and retention tools are now coming online to reach more.
